Jet-Setting with Janine: Brazil

Carnaval

There are incentive trips… and then there’s Brazil. I was lucky enough to experience both Rio and Iguazu Falls as part of the industry event inVOYAGE, followed by a post-event FAM trip hosted by the incredible Belmond Hotels. Let’s just say, celebrating my birthday in Brazil set a new standard for memorable.

From samba to sunsets, this adventure was a powerful reminder of why Brazil is the ultimate incentive destination. Here’s a peek into what we saw, felt, and celebrated, and why this destination should be on your radar for future events and incentives.

Rio De Janeiro

From the moment we landed in Rio, the experience felt elevated. A warm VIP airport welcome fast-tracked us through security and baggage claim, complete with buggy transfer, and we were out in no time, ready to explore.

A short transfer took us to the Fairmont Copacabana, perfectly located on one of Rio’s most iconic beachfronts. We arrived on a weekend, when the beachfront road is closed to traffic and comes alive with music, caipirinha stalls, locals heading to the beach, and a warm breeze rolling in from the ocean. With Carnival season in the air, the energy was electric.

The Fairmont Copacabana offered a smooth check-in and a sneak peek into their event and meeting spaces, which were far from standard. Their ballroom and breakout spaces have a character and flair that would elevate any event or conference.

Sailing, Samba and Unforgettable Moments

That evening we boarded a luxury yacht for a private cruise with live music, traditional Brazilian food including seafood moqueca, and cocktails flowing as we watched the sun set over Guanabara Bay. The view of Christ the Redeemer from a distance created a sense of anticipation and awe.

Later, we were welcomed poolside back at the Fairmont for a relaxed drinks reception overlooking the beach. Then, we were off to Mangueira Samba School for an unforgettable Carnival rehearsal. The streets were alive with energy, people dressed in vibrant colours, drums pounding, and dancers moving with unstoppable rhythm. By complete coincidence, I arrived wearing the samba school’s colour. It felt meant to be.

Culture, Cuisine and Carnival Magic

The next day, we visited Christ the Redeemer just before sunset, a truly humbling experience. Dinner followed at Casa Camolese, an elegant venue that balances contemporary design with Brazilian soul. Afterward, we had the chance to try on authentic Carnival costumes, followed by another samba performance that pulled us into the rhythm once more. Naturally, I couldn’t resist joining in.

Our final day in Rio included a drumming workshop with two of Brazil’s top samba talents, followed by a behind-the-scenes visit to see Carnival floats in production. Phones were off, as everything is top secret until the big parade. We ended the Rio chapter with a stunning evening at the iconic Copacabana Palace, the perfect finale to an unforgettable first leg of the journey.

Iguazu Falls

Next, we boarded a short flight to Iguazu Falls for an experience that felt like stepping into a dream. Staying at Belmond Hotel das Cataratas, the only hotel inside the national park, gave us exclusive access to the falls before and after hours.

We were welcomed with a private sunset reception on the lawn with views of the falls, and learned about the surrounding wildlife, from toucans to coatis. Dinner that evening was exceptional, and the service throughout was thoughtful and warm.

The next day started with a private walk to Devil’s Throat before the park opened to the public. The entire trail was empty, giving us uninterrupted views of one of the world’s most powerful waterfalls. Back at the hotel, we celebrated with mimosas and an exotic tropical breakfast featuring Brazilian cherries and soursop.

A helicopter ride followed, offering a spectacular aerial view of the falls, complete with rainbow mist. Then it was off to the Bird Park, followed by a high-speed RIB boat adventure straight into the base of the falls. As if that wasn’t enough excitement, a tropical rainstorm kicked in just to add a little drama.

That evening, a private BBQ had been planned for our group. Although originally set for the lawn, the hotel quickly transitioned to an indoor space when the rain started. The private room with terrace captured the same energy, and the Belmond team added thoughtful birthday touches that made the night feel incredibly personal and special.

Argentina in the Afternoon

On our final day, we crossed the border into Argentina to see the falls from the top. Just a 45-minute drive, it’s an easy and seamless dual-country addition to any incentive trip. The walkways offered new perspectives and stunning photo ops that complemented the Brazilian side perfectly.

We returned to the Belmond for a 10-course tasting menu at Restaurant Y, led by renowned Chef Luiz Filipe Souza. While the restaurant itself doesn’t hold a Michelin star, Chef Souza is the talent behind two-starred Evvai in São Paulo, and the dinner reflected that excellence. Each course came with a custom-designed postcard describing the dish which added a thoughtful storytelling layer to the evening.
